Contex scanning technology helps bring life back to the Grateful Dead

Summary – CFS, Inc. works with artist to scan Grateful Dead original artwork

CFS, Inc. is a technology firm that provides computer aided drafting (CAD), computer aided facility management (CAFM), graphic design, scanning and plotting services to both national and local clients. Due to their location in the Thousand Islands region of New York, several of their clients include fine artists.

In March of 2006, CFS, Inc. was approached by client Jill Ahlgrim of Bergen Wild with an interesting project. They needed high resolution, large format scanning solutions for original artwork from Grateful Dead artist Vince Perez. Bergen Wild needed to have the delicate original drawing scanned so that they could be reproduced on clothing.

Mr. Perez is just one of three artists who created original artwork for the Grateful Dead. His artwork appeared on album covers, tour books, posters and t-shirts.

The challenge: Ensuring originals were not damaged

Original artwork from artists like Vince Perez is priceless. One of the greatest concerns CFS, Inc. faced was making sure that the originals were not damaged in any way. Additionally, they wanted to be sure they would be able to scan the high-profile original artwork accurately and capture a precise image of the piece.

Fortunately, President Thomas Brennan had several years of experience with his Contex Magnum XL 54 Plus scanner which was purchased in October 2004. He knew that the originals would be handled by the scanner with the utmost of care.

“The feeding mechanism on the Contex scanner is very well designed and gave me the confidence to accept the job,” said Mr. Brennan.

The Solution: Contex Magnum XL 54 Plus

CFS, Inc. utilized their Contex Magnum XL 54 Plus scanner to scan the original artwork. The originals, some of which were on delicate material like tissue paper, were carefully taken directly from the artist’s portfolio and fed into the scanner.

Most of the scans were done in 24 bit color and the resolution used was between 400 and 1000 DPI. CFS, Inc. also did some additional image editing with Wide Image software and large formatting plotting of some of the originals.

“The resulting scanned images are simply outstanding,” notes Mr. Brennan. “We were able to take superb care in handling the rare and priceless originals.”

The Results: Happy repeat customers!

Not only was CFS, Inc. happy with the results – but their clients were very pleased with the scanning services provided. Mr. Brennan knows that the best positive feedback is repeat business, which is now in its fourth year.

Along with additional projects for artist Vince Perez, CFS, Inc. has done work for David Doubilet, the acclaimed underwater photographer for National Geographic.

They continue to make use of their Contex scanner on a wide range of projects – from scanning for architecture and engineering firms to copy and graphic design services. “Our Contex Magnum 54 Plus has been the cornerstone of our graphics department,” said Mr. Brennan.
